organisers

The Business Journalist of the Year Awards are organised by The World Leadership Forum of Warnford Court, 29 Throgmorton Street, London.

purpose

The purpose of the awards is to encourage clear, accurate and fair reporting of business issues which are of importance both to the business community, and to the public.

entrants

Only editors, or managing editors, of newspapers, magazines, newsletters, television programmes, radio programmes and internet websites may enter journalists for these awards.

Journalists who do not have the endorsement of their editor may not enter.

Journalists who reach the shortlists are required to attend the Presentation Ceremony in London on 24th April 2008. All shortlisted journalists will receive complimentary invitations to the ceremony, but the organisers will not pay their travel or accommodation costs.

Journalists who are unable, or unwilling, to attend the Presentation Ceremony should not be entered, unless they can be represented by their editor.

If shortlisted journalists fail to attend the ceremony for reasons other than illness or bereavement, and if their editors also fail to attend the ceremony, they may be disqualified.

Editors can submit articles, or broadcasts, which have been published or transmitted during the period 1st December, 2006 to 30th November, 2007.

All entries must be received by no later than Friday, 1st February 2008.

They can have been written by a single journalist or a group of journalists.

categories

Editors must specify which category they are entering a submission for by ticking the appropriate box on the entry form.

No submission may be entered into more than one category.

The Best Story, Best Feature and Best Scoop categories are for a single outstanding story, irrespective of other work, though each journalist/team submission can still contain up to three stories in these categories.

All other categories are for a body of work published over the last year and each journalist/team can enter up to three items per submission.

Please note that all items entered under a Team submission must ALL have been written by the same journalists i.e. up to three items written by the same group of people.

Broadcast entries, including internet broadcasts & podcasts, can only be entered in the following categories:

In the event that insufficient entries are received to create a meaningful shortlist in a category the organisers reserve the right to move entries to another suitable category.

number of entries

Each publication or broadcaster may enter up to two submissions (i.e. the work of up to two different journalists, or two different teams of journalists) per category.

In 'Best Deadline/Breaking News Story', each journalist's/team's submission can contain up to five items published/broadcast over a few hours or days. These items must be linked to the same story.

In all other categories, each journalist's/team's submission can contain up to three items published/broadcast over the last year i.e. up to three items per person/team per category. These items do not have to be linked.

method of entry

A complete Entry Form must accompany all entries. A printable version of the entry form can be found on the Entry Form page of this website. Entries must be accompanied by a clear copy of the published article. This must be a cutting or a clear photocopy, not a typescript or a transcript.

Please do not bind or staple sheets together as they just have to be removed if we have to make further copies.

Television broadcasts should be submitted in the form of a VHS video cassette tape in PAL format, or a DVD. Radio broadcasts should be submitted in the form of a CD. Please send 6 copies of each tape, DVD or CD.

The closing date for entries will be Friday, 1st February, 2008.

A shortlist of up to five submissions in each category will be published on this website on Tuesday, 25th March, 2008.

The winning submissions will be announced at the Presentation Ceremony in London on Thursday, 24th April 2008, and published on this website on Friday, 25th April, 2008.

judges

These awards are judged exclusively by journalists or former journalists. The decisions of the judges will be final. All entrants must agree to be bound by them and they will not be subject to any appeal. Neither the judges, nor the organisers, are obliged to give any reasons for their judgments, or enter into any correspondence with the entrants, or their representatives.

Judges must recuse themselves when judging the work of colleagues on their own publication, or sister publications. They must stand down (or transfer to another category) if asked to judge their own work. In such cases the organisers will take the average mark given by the remaining judges and apply it as the mark of the recused or stood-down judge.

Criteria

Entries for the Business Journalist of the Year Awards are judged against three criteria:

1) Quality of research and investigation
2) Originality
3) Style

Citations

Editors may add a supporting citation to an entry, if they wish. Citations can be used to point out any special circumstances, obstacles etc that the judges might not otherwise be aware of. Citations must not be more than 250 words long.
